Honoring Veterans: Understanding the Meaning of Freedom

Veterans Day is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who have served and to celebrate the freedoms their service has helped preserve. At WeShare, we’re committed to honoring veterans not just on this day, but every day, by recognizing their contributions and supporting their transition into civilian life. One way we extend this support is by offering medical health sharing plans that prioritize community and shared values, providing a unique alternative to traditional healthcare.

In our first episode of the WeShare Podcast, we had the privilege of speaking with Carlos Oregon — a WeShare board member, CEO, and veteran. Carlos embodies the core values of service, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of freedom. Host Brittany Moses sat down with Carlos to discuss his military experience, the lessons he’s carried into his career, and what freedom means to him today.

Insights from Carlos Oregon

BM: So, what does freedom mean to you personally, and how has your perspective on freedom evolved over the years, especially as a veteran and now as a CEO?

CO: For me, freedom has always been about having a choice and opportunity to pursue one’s potential. As a young airman, freedom felt like responsibility — to protect it and to ensure it for others. Now as a CEO, I view freedom is something we cultivate within our organization. It’s about giving my team the freedom to not only innovate, but to give them the space to grow and support to pursue their personal and professional goals. Freedom is not just the right; it’s a mindset and a privilege that we should enable for others.

BM: When you joined the UHSM Board of Directors, did you feel there was a connection with you personally, professionally and spiritually? What did you feel like that was for you in terms of making that connection with UHSM?

CO: Absolutely. UHSM’s mission to promote health and wellbeing resonates with my values, and serving on the board has allowed me to align my professional skills with my personal values, and it gives me the chance to support an organization that makes a real difference in people’s lives.

BM: What message would you like to share with fellow veterans and those celebrating Veterans Day?

CO: I guess to my fellow veterans, I would say thank you for your service and for the sacrifice you and your families have made. I remind them to remember that their skills and values that they’ve learned in the military have prepared them for whatever comes next. And for everyone celebrating Veteran’s Day I’d encourage you to take a moment to recognize the service and the commitment our veterans have made and to remember the true meaning of freedom.

Honoring Veterans Through Reflection and Action

As we reflect on this important day, Carlos’s words remind us of the enduring value of service and the many ways veterans contribute to their communities even after their time in uniform. At WeShare, we celebrate these contributions by fostering a supportive environment and providing resources like medical health sharing plans, which are designed to offer flexible, community-based solutions for healthcare.

Listening to the full podcast episode with Carlos is a meaningful way to connect with the spirit of Veterans Day and to deepen your understanding of what honoring veterans truly means. This conversation not only highlights the courage and dedication of those who serve but also encourages us all to uphold the freedoms they have worked to protect.
