Veterans Day Tribute: Honoring Service and Sacrifice

Veterans Day is a special time to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who have served in the military, ensuring the freedoms we hold dear. This Veterans Day tribute is an opportunity to honor their courage, selflessness, and commitment to protecting our nation.

In my elementary school, we had a Veterans Day assembly every year. Younger children performed patriotic songs, older kids read poems about historical battles, and the community was invited to celebrate the men and women who served our country.

My favorite moment of the program each year was when veterans from different branches were honored — the band played a medley of military songs, and as each anthem was played, members of that branch were invited to stand. There was this swell of pride in each chest upon standing, and a tenderness as strangers from the same branch caught each other’s eyes and saluted. I loved the camaraderie, the sense of belonging that hung over the room. It was poignant, memorable, and unifying.

The Power of Community and Shared Values

In many ways, isn’t that what we’re all looking for in our own lives? Whether in our schools, our neighborhoods, or faith communities, we desire the safety and comfort that comes from looking around a room full of strangers and seeing others who share the values we hold most dear. This is what makes Veterans Day such a special way to memorialize and honor every person who has served in the military — it’s a time for us all to step closer to what binds us and intentionally extend our thanks to those who said they were willing to fight for those things on our behalf.

This sense of shared purpose is also reflected in organizations like WeShare, which fosters a spirit of community through initiatives such as Christian healthcare sharing. Much like the camaraderie veterans experience, healthcare sharing is rooted in collective support, ensuring that individuals are there for one another in times of need.

The Selfless Spirit of Veterans

Though we have many things that individualize us and make us unique, the beauty of a veteran’s life is that they each, at some point, made a decision to defend the freedom of strangers — to care for the wellbeing of people they do not know and may never meet. To look at the differences that exist between us, and then say that everyone should have freedom, and more than that, to say that the things that bind us are worth the fight. That concern for everyone’s freedom is selfless and sacrificial.
